DESCRIPTION: Mechanical Curiosities- 5 (Five): (1) Nagoya-Shoji, Japan, clockwork fly trap, spring driven movement with rotating drum and screened insect enclosure in a wood case, c1910; (2) Air-purifying device, spring driven movement powering a fan, enclosed in metal, c1895; (3) Paper tape or film winding device, spring driven movement in cast iron frame accepting tape approximately 0.5 inches wide, c1890; (4) J.H. Bunnell & Co., New York, film or paper tape winder, spring driven movement, accepting tape approximately 0.75 inches wide, c1910; (5) "Abe's Patent" automatic bell, spring driven movement with winding handle on the front and top-mounted bell, c1880.
CONDITION: (1) The wood case is in very good condition. Screen enclosure is complete. Glass window to attract insects is complete. A remarkable piece. (2) The device is in good condition, but may need mechanical attention. It is likely missing a decorative element over the reservoir. The patent shows a metal flower form in that location. The device uses a spring-driven motor to pass air through a sponge that rests in a fluid disinfectant or fragrance. Patent info may be found in the August 1973 issue of the NAWCC Bulletin (page 1334). (3) and (4) Units were not tested and may require service. (5) The handle is rotated to a number on the dial and the bell will strike the assigned number of times. The movement is a bit sluggish and will require cleaning. Dimensions are for the fly trap (1).
